I thought care work wasn’t for me – until I started doing it

Name: Martijn (32)
Function: Domestic help
Region: Zaanstreek-Waterland

After years of casual jobs in logistics, Martijn suddenly found himself without a job. “I had no qualifications in healthcare, so I thought: that’s nothing for me. But through Werkcentrum Zaanstreek-Waterland I became curious anyway.” During an orientation meeting with a career coach, Martijn discovered that there are indeed opportunities, even without experience or education.

“They told me that there are also jobs where you can just start and learn the trade on the job. That appealed to me.”

Martijn started as a domestic worker in Purmerend. His tasks? Making coffee, tidying rooms, running errands, having a chat with the resident(s) – and above all: giving attention.

“I felt welcome right away. And I saw how much you can mean just by being there for people.”

Martijn had the opportunity to take an online course. This gave him practical tools to get started.

“I learn every day. And I notice that I have grown myself – in self-confidence and in people skills.”
